{"id":239,"date":"2004-07-02T05:01:00","date_gmt":"2004-07-02T05:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bobtherieau.com\/blog\/index.php\/2004\/07\/02\/77ee534f-6d65-47a6-83c7-20a094d450f3\/"},"modified":"2018-06-13T01:29:40","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T01:29:40","slug":"77ee534f-6d65-47a6-83c7-20a094d450f3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bobtherieau.com\/blog\/2004\/07\/77ee534f-6d65-47a6-83c7-20a094d450f3\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-src=\"v5\">\n<p><b>Why Go To Saturn?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/saturn.jpl.nasa.gov\/home\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">NASA site<\/a> itself poses the question, but I think I have a couple answers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because the science is useful to us down here (even I can figure <i>that<\/i> out, and I didn&#8217;t even read their spiel).<\/li>\n<li>Because the successful insertion of a spacecraft into such a hostile orbit shows that our guys can still do some pretty hairy stunts and come out of it without blowing up a bazillion-dollar machine which is good for the morale of the people working other programs.<\/li>\n<li>Because if we&#8217;re ever going to get the proletariat off of this rock, we need to know how to do long-term travel, and analysis of other planets remotely, and understand the hazards better before we even think about contemplating sending a senator&#8217;s daughter up there.<\/li>\n<li>And because the grainy B&#038;W photos even caught dopes like me off-guard with their beauty and provided me with a glimpse of something I thought I understood, but clearly don&#8217;t (take a look at the pictures of the rings that show the <b>waves<\/b>! Cripes!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yeah, I think it&#8217;s money well-spent. But hell, I also thought that I&#8217;d see civilians flying into space in my lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><a herf=\"http:\/\/www.scaled.com\/projects\/tierone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oh, wait.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your pal,<\/p>\n<p>bob<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Go To Saturn?
